Brazilian aftercare: what to do in the first 48 hours (plus summer tips)

By Spa Apsara | August 1, 2026

We hear it all the time, especially from first-timers who told us we made them feel comfortable in a clean space: the first 48 hours matter most. The #1 rule is simple, keep the area clean, cool, and dry. That means no hot baths, pools, tanning, heavy sweating, or sex for two days so your skin can calm down and stay smooth.

Quick reality check: redness and a little tenderness right after your Brazilian is normal. What usually causes trouble is heat, friction, and bacteria too soon, not the wax itself.

0–48 hours after your Brazilian: the exact do’s and don’ts we want you to follow

If you only remember one thing, keep it cool and breathable. Fircrest summers tend to be mild and wet, but once you add outdoor plans and more movement, sweat and friction can still sneak up on you.

0–24 hours

  • Cleanse gently with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser. Pat dry, don’t rub.
  • Skip heat: no hot showers, baths, saunas, or steam rooms.
  • Avoid sweat: we generally recommend no heavy workouts for the first day.
  • No friction: wear loose clothing and breathable cotton underwear.
  • No sex for at least 24 hours. (48 is better if you’re feeling sensitive.)

24–48 hours

  • Still avoid pools and hot tubs. This is the big one for “can I swim after a Brazilian?”
  • Skip tanning, including tanning beds and long sun exposure. Freshly waxed skin gets irritated faster.
  • Keep it dry. If you’re running around Regents Boulevard or shopping nearby, bring a clean pair of cotton underwear to change into if you get sweaty.

A practical tip for our Fircrest clients: try early-morning or evening appointments when you can. It makes it easier to go straight home and stay cool, instead of stepping right back into heat and sweating.

Days 3–7: how we prevent irritation and ingrowns once the “heat window” is over

By day three, most people feel normal again. This is where good habits keep your skin smooth longer. A lot of our regulars stick with us because we pay attention to sensitive skin and we don’t rush the details, so you’re not leaving with irritation or missed patches.

Start gentle exfoliation at 48–72 hours: use a soft washcloth in the shower or a mild scrub. Keep it light. Aggressive scrubs and picking are what usually trigger bumps.

If you’re doing outdoor plans around Tacoma, University Place, or a Chambers Bay trip, shower sooner rather than later and change out of damp clothes. Sweat sitting on freshly waxed skin is a common irritation trigger, even in our milder summer weather.

Products we actually like for post-Brazilian care (simple, fragrance-free)

You don’t need a complicated routine. You need the right types of products, used at the right time. If you tend to react easily, keep everything fragrance-free for the first 48 hours.

First 48 hours

  • Fragrance-free gentle cleanser
  • Witch hazel (lightly applied) for soothing
  • Aloe vera gel (thin layer, clean hands)
  • Light, non-comedogenic moisturizer if you feel dry

What to avoid (at least 48 hours)

  • Oils and heavy occlusive products that trap heat and sweat
  • Scented lotions
  • Strong acids or harsh “body acne” products on the area

And please don’t tweeze or shave in between. If you’re growing out for your next appointment, remember the prep rule we stand by: hair should be at least a quarter-inch long for the best results.

When to reach out to our Fircrest waxing team (and when to rebook)

A little redness, mild swelling, and sensitivity right after a Brazilian is usually normal. What we don’t want you to ignore is anything that looks like it’s getting worse instead of better.

Reach out promptly if you have persistent swelling, increasing pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, or anything that feels like an infection. If you’re worried, let us know. We’d rather talk it through early.

We work with busy schedules across Fircrest, Tacoma, University Place, Lakewood, Steilacoom, and Parkland, so you can keep your routine without unnecessary downtime. If you want the easiest maintenance, most people do best rebooking every 4 to 6 weeks. If you’re new to waxing or you’re coming from shaving, you might land closer to 4 weeks at first.

If you’re still in the research phase, these two reads help a lot: what to expect for your first Brazilian and why people stick with Brazilian waxing. And if you want to compare options, our waxing services in Fircrest lays it out clearly.

Yes. We recommend a gentle shower with lukewarm water the same day. Use a fragrance-free cleanser, rinse well, and pat dry with a clean towel. Skip hot water, heavy scrubbing, and any scented body wash for the first 48 hours.

Give it at least 48 hours before swimming, using a hot tub, or soaking in a bath. Pools, lakes, and hot tubs add heat and bacteria exposure when your skin is most reactive, so waiting helps prevent irritation and bumps.

We suggest waiting at least 24 hours, and 48 hours if you’re feeling tender. The goal is to avoid friction and bacteria while the skin calms down.

Start gentle exfoliation after 48 to 72 hours, not sooner. A soft washcloth in the shower or a mild scrub is usually enough. Keep the area moisturized with a light, fragrance-free moisturizer, avoid tight clothing, and don’t pick at bumps.

Most people do best every 4 to 6 weeks. If you’re new to waxing or you’ve been shaving, you may prefer closer to 4 weeks at first until your growth pattern settles in.
